01 / Understand

Describe the days, not just the rooms.

A number of bedrooms does not say everything about a house. Describe a weekday morning, a day working from home, and an evening with guests. Note the routes, the objects to store, the noises to isolate and the spaces where you want to be.

This description becomes a design tool. If two people are working at the same time, acoustic separation may matter more than a very large desk. If you entertain often, a kitchen-terrace connection may become a priority.

02 / Understand

Separate the essential from the adjustable.

Divide the requests into three columns: essential, desired and postponeable. Associate a reason with each priority. “Room on the ground floor to accommodate a loved one” is more helpful in deciding than “additional bedroom”.

Keep this list dated. When the budget or the terrain imposes a trade-off, return to the initial reasons. A surface modification then becomes an explicit decision, not a succession of difficult-to-understand renunciations.

03 / Understand

Prepare the first exchange.

Your program can bring together the occupants, uses, relationships between rooms, location criteria, the planned envelope and the unknowns. Include some ambiance references, explaining what you like about each.

Distinguish a wish from an already verified constraint. You can request a clear view without yet knowing which location allows it. The role of the studies will be to compare this program to the field. The S1GULARIS “Your project” course helps initiate this exchange.

Put into practice

An exercise for your project.

Choose five important uses. For each, write down the need, its reason and what could be adapted. Finish with the three questions you don't yet know how to answer.

Things to remember

A program expresses uses and priorities; it leaves room for design work.

It's up to you

Check your benchmarks.

Two questions to reread the essential points. You can change your answers and try again.

1. What starting point best helps the designer?
2. Why prioritize requests?
Answer both questions to check your answers.

Free course, without account and without certification. Progress is not sent to a server.
